Our Model

The premise is simple: help a generation of teenage girls in Uganda take charge of their bodies and health, so that their full potential can be released. We believe that by addressing reproductive health concerns of females we can help remove yet another barrier to female educational achievement in Uganda. Our program takes a holistic approach to transformation – providing not only access to feminine care materials, but also local leadership support, and instruction for girls as peer educators. Every element of our business is designed to nurture each girl and help her define and realize her dreams.

ACCESS, EDUCATION, SUPPORT

Access

By producing and providing access to quality hygienic and affordable sanitary pads, we aim to increase the retention rates of girls in school throughout rural Uganda. The Eco-pads team remains devoted to the production of quality pads at prices affordable for our target population. Research has shown that local girls are more likely to be absent during menses when they lack access to reliable and hygienic sanitary products. Missing classes every month makes it even harder for a girl to stay on educational track. That’s where we come in!

Education

Even though menstruation is a natural and universal process, it is often linked with several misconceptions and malpractices, which often result in adverse health outcomes. Locally, poor hygiene during menstruation has been associated with serious ill-health, including reproductive tract and urinary tract infections. During menarche, girls experience many different feelings including fear, shame and guilt because of lack of prior information about menstruation. Puberty is a time with many scary changes, and Eco-pads wants to show these girls that they are not alone!

Eco-pads believes that all girls have the right to be endowed with knowledge of their reproductive anatomy. Our team strives to provide open and comfortable opportunities for women to discuss basic hygiene, and sexual reproductive health. As research has shown, the best way to learn is to teach others. For this reason, Eco-pads has been working hand-in-hand with schools to train girls as peer educators. After training, these girls act as representatives to their schools and communities. Because of the private nature of this information, we believe peers will be an invaluable source of knowledge and mentorship in both their schools and communities. Through our programs these girls are taught the most modern information on basic hygiene, and sexual reproductive health, and are instructed to share their knowledge with others. Here at Eco-pads we are working to fight the stigma associated with menstruation and create opportunities for open dialogue!

Support

The Eco-pads team is dedicated to providing support for schools and reproductive health education programs. We believe that all young women are in need of inspiring and helpful mentors. For this reason, Eco-pads has taken it upon itself to partner with community leaders and teachers. Eco-pad leaders have been working to train teachers and community leaders as volunteer mentors for female students. These mentors are taught about the specific challenges girl students face in education systems and ways to mitigate these challenges. We know that these girls are not educated on their bodies. We know that these girls are in need of advocates. We aim to provide yet another support network these girls can reach out to!
